Lion's Mane Extract

What is Lion's Mane Mushroom 8:1 Extract?

Lion's Mane (or Hericium Erinaceus) is a medicinal mushroom which provides a vast number of benefits. Lion's Mane is native to Europe, Asia, and North America - although Asia (and more specifically China) are the global leaders in growing and extracting Lion's Mane Mushrooms. Over 90% of the world's Lion's Mane is produced in China. It's also a tasty edible mushroom and is commonly used in cooking and to make mushroom tea or coffee. It is naturally found growing on trees in the late summer and can be identified by its white, fur-like appearance.

Lion's Mane Mushroom 8:1 Extract Capsules Benefits

Also known as Yamabushitake, Lion's Mane contains a wide range of varying polysaccharides. Beta-glucans are the only relevant polysaccharide in Lion's Mane extract, which is why it is important to always ensure beta-glucan content is stated. The total polysaccharide percentage is misleading due to many, many mushroom products on the market being adulterated with grain starch, which provides no benefits and artificially inflates the polysaccharide content.

The mushroom is harvested and extracted from either the mycelium or the fruiting bodies, both of which carry their own unique compounds. These compounds are called terpenes, more commonly known as erinacines and hericenones. Erinacines are primarily found in the mycelium, whereas the hericenones are primarily found in the fruiting bodies. We utilize only the fruiting body extract, which is the beta-gucan and terpene containing part of a Lion's Mane Mushroom.

These compounds support neuroplasticity by optimizing NGF. The ones found in Lion's Mane are among the most potent naturally occurring compounds for inducing NGF production in vitro.1, 2, 3

Lion's Mane Mushroom extract has shown to exhibit neuroprotection via Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) stimulation. NGF is responsible for dealing with the growth and repair of neurons.

Why choose an 8:1 Lion's Mane Extract?

This particular lion's mane mushroom extract is dual-extracted to provide maximum benefits from the medicinal mushroom. The terpenes are what sets a dual-extract apart from a water extract.

First, the whole fruiting bodies are extracted in boiling water. This is how a 1:1 extract is created. However, with dual-extraction the mushrooms are then processed again, but this time using alcohol. This will assist with breaking down and releasing the terpenes contained within the mushroom fruiting bodies. Since these terpenes are insoluble in water, they are only present in dual-extracts.

Since we have already extracted the beta-glucans using water, these are also present in the final dual-extract powder. It is worth noting that the concentration of beta-glucans will be lower in a dual-extract, as some are lost due to evaporation as a result of the secondary extraction process.

What about higher extraction ratios?

You may have seen Lion's Mane mushroom extracts with ratios of 10:1, 12:1 or 20:1. So why are we selling an 8:1 extract?

The problem is keeping Lion's Mane stable in powder form while increasing the extraction ratio. As you know, this ratio refers to the amount of raw material used to produce a finished extract. Once Lion's Mane is extracted in a ratio higher than 8:1, it has not been possible to keep it stable in powder form. As it is, both Lion's Mane and Cordyceps tend to absorb moisture from the air and clump up, and without adding any fillers, the highest possible ratio that keeps Lion's Mane extract stable in powder form is 8:1. This is why high-extract ratios of this ingredient have to be adulterated with additional fillers to keep the powder stable in powder form.

To put it simply, 8:1 is the highest extraction ratio possible for Lion's Mane extracts without adding fillers to stabilize it.

Why don't we list the percentage of terpenes?

Lion's mane mushrooms are unique in that they contain a vast range of different terpenes, more specifically di-terpenes and sesquiterpenes. Isolating and studying these individual compounds is a complex science. Since HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography) alone is not sufficient in accuracy, the lab equipment required is not only very expensive, but also very specialised. So much so that almost no one has been using the correct equipment and expertise to quantify the terpenes in lion's mane mushroom properly.

Since there is no recognised standard or method for accurately quantifying the terpenes (hericenones and erinacines) in Lion's Mane mushroom extracts (yet), we do not list a percentage. Anyone providing these figures is presenting results based on unverified science or simply making them up. Learn more about it in our blog here.
