What is Magnesium N-Acetyltaurinate (ATA Mg®)?

Magnesium is an essential cofactor for more than 300 enzymes involved in biosynthesis processes and energy metabolism. Intracell magnesium deficiency results in Calcium overload leading to cell death.

Taurine is one of the most abundant amino acids in the central nervous system. Taurine plays critical roles in brain function and acts as a neuro-osmolyte, neuro-modulator, and a relaxing neurotransmitter. ATA Mg® provides magnesium in a unique bioavailable form: ATAMg® is a patented acetyltaurinate magnesium salt which offers enhanced magnesium cell penetration and provides physiological properties related to optimized intracell magnesium concentration.

ATA Mg® provides magnesium in the form of N-Acetyl Taurine or N-acetyltaurinate. This is a sulfur-containing β-amino acid, taurine, in which the amine function has been acetylated. Taurine is an amino acid abundant in many foods, and present in large amounts in the brain, heart, and retina.

The acetylation of taurine removes the zwitterion structure of taurine, providing ATA Mg® with a lipophilic character which facilitates membrane phospholipids passage and cell penetration for both magnesium and taurine, in particular into neuronal cells.

ATA Mg® is a structural analog to two major neurotransmitters involved in neuro excitation: kainic acid and glutamic acid.
